BAYFIELD SCHOOL PICNIC.

SUCCESSFUL OUTLNG.

; Tim annual picnic in connection with the Bayfield public school was held at Motukorea (Brown's Island) yesterday. There ■was a large attendance of scholars and j adults, the total present being over 1000. ' The ferry steamer Kestral, which was engaged for the occasion, conveyed most of i the passengers from and to the Ponsonby Wharf, x considerable number also join- | ing the steamer at the city ferry wharf. j The day was spent most pleasantly at the island. The arrangements made by the teachers and the other members -sof an ; energetic committee—notably Messrs. W. J. Campbell. W. Parkinson, and Chap- | man— most satisfactory. Teachers in the school had charge of various sections of the children. Miss Thompson, infant mistress, looked,after the children of the infant classes, and Misses Cole and Caldwell had charge of the senior girls, while Misses Jones and Brenkley had charge of the junior girls. The headmaster, Mr. A. N. Bowden, and the other male teachers were in charge of the boys. An interesting programme of sports, for which prizes were provided, was carried out during the afternoon. The school championship was won by James Alexander, who annexed the lOOyds. 220 yds, and 440 yds events. The steamer left on the return journey shortly after five o'clock, and landed the picnickers at Ponsonby at half-oast six.
