HARD ON SMUGGLERS.

—: _*, , TWO BROTHERS SENTENCED. [FROM our OWN correspondent.] San Francisco, February 15. Little leniency is shown with smugglers in the United States nowadays, -and the more prominent the offenders the more serious their offence is considered. Lucius N. Littauer, for 10 years a prominent member of the Hotne of Representatives, and his brother William, .who admitted bringing into this country valuable jewellery, purchased' in Venice, wtihont paying any duty thereon, have been fined £200 each, and sentenced to six months' imprisonment. The Court, however, suspended sentence as to the gaol penalty This means that their conduct ■ will be watched by the authorities for five years, and the gaol penalty will hang over them during that time. The judge told the defendants that this would not be the policy of tho Court in future He severely reprimanded both of them, and said that the fact that Lochs Littauer had served 10 years in Congress, and the general high standing of the offenders, aggravated, rather than mitigated, their offence. The fact that they had pleaded guilty and made full restitution to the Government, and also the ill-health" of Lucius Littauer, were taken into consideration by the Judge in dealing with them. sssuss ' ——————— i
