The citizens' carnival at Wellington this year is expected to yield a surplus of a little over £1000. Last year over £2000 was netted, but other demands upon the public, following the strike troubles, probably accounts for the shrinkage.—(Press Association.)
At a special meeting of the Birkenhead Borough Council on Monday night, the resolution to borrow £3500 to pay off the liabilities incurred in connection with the installation of a water supply and rood improvements, in excess of the £25,000 loan, was confirmed.
KeivJworth, the boardinghouso in St. Paul's Street, which was gutted by fire on Monday evening, was owned by Mr. Thomas Buxton, of the Albert Hotel. It was insured for between £800 and £1000. Mrs. Gray, the tenant, estimates the 1 >ss she has sustained at £200.

Tim dearth of fire-plugs in the Domain Road, Mount Albert, was referred to in a letter received by the Borough Council on Monday evening. "In .such conditions," said the writer, " the fire brigade are helpless. The matter was referred to the Water Committee for attention.
Building enterprise was indicated in the report of the building inspector (Mr. J. 0. Moodifl) to the" Mount Albert Borough Council on Monday night, which suited hat 24 permits had been issued for February, to the total value of £6791. Of tlii* number 17 were for new dwellings, at an aggregate cost of £6523.
A proposed motor-"bus service for residents in Edendale was brought to the attention of the Mount Albert Borough Council on Monday evening, together with a suggested time-table for the service, by Mr. C. W. Harris, who stated that the subject, would lie further discussed at a subsequent public meeting of residents.
The sum of £145 has now been subscribed towards the fund of £500 for the purchase of a motor ambulance for the Auckland Hospital. The sweeping of the Auckland wharves is at present costing the Harbour Board £1700 a year. In consequence it was recently decidod to purcliaso a mechanical sweeper for the sake of economy.
