SUBURBAN IMPROVEMENTS.

The great growth of population in Mount Albert district has forced the Mayor and Council to submit for the approval of the ratepayers a big scheme of borough improvement. Loans totalling £50,000 are proposed, the largest items being for reconstruction of roads, the purchase of a steam roller and crusher, and the supply of water to newly-settled parts of the borough. Much of the road work is urgent, and the programme promises permanence in return for a considerable expenditure; the water supply is essential; the steam roller and crusher are expected to lead to economy in future roadmaking and maintenance. The scheme may, therefore, be expected to receive sympathetic consideration and support from the large body of the ratepayers. An extension of the tramway lines has been promised by the Tramways Company in connection with the reconstruction of the New North Road. This will not only lead to increased population' in Mount Albert Borough but opens the possibility of two further short extensions, each of about a mile in length, which would bring Avondale and Point Chevalier into complete tramway connection with the city.
