Mr. and Mrs. H. Dearsley returned to Auckland by the Maheno from Sydney yestei Jay. Mr. G. W. Mcßae, engineer in charge of the Birkenhead borough waterworks, has tendered-his resignation. Mr. 0. A. l'aape) returned to Auckland by the Manaia on I Saturday evening from the Pay of Islands. During his two weeks' tour Mr. l'aape. addressed 12 meetings in the principal centred The organiser is of opinion that, notwithstanding rumours to the contrary, only one candidate will contest the Ray of Islands seat at the forthcoming election. A meeting of delegates representing tho various blanches will be held at Oliaeawai at an early date. Sir Newton .Tames Moore. K.CM.G., Agent-General in London for West Australia for thr past three years, and for five years prior to that State Premier, arrived in Auckland from Sydney by the Maheno yesterday. Sir Newton has' been on tti visit to his native place for four weeks, mid i has, more recently, spent a week in Melbourne. He intends proceeding to Rotorua "ii Tuesday, and will return in time to catch the Makura on Saturday next for Vancouver. In the meantime he is staying at the Grand Hotel. Sir Newton was for many years an active member of the Liberal Party in West Australia He became Minister for Lands in 1905, and in the following year accepted the Premiership, which office lie resigned in 1911 on account of indifferent health. The present Government of the State has just decided to renew bis tern as Atf»nt General, and Sir Newton his accepted the responsibility. He holds the rank of lieutenant-colonel, and is now Officer Commanding the Australian Intelligence Corps (W.A. division).
