Sir Newton was for many years an active member of the Liberal Party in West Australia He became Minister for Lands in 1905, and in the following year accepted the Premiership, which office lie resigned in 1911 on account of indifferent health. The present Government of the State has just decided to renew bis tern as Atf»nt General, and Sir Newton his accepted the responsibility. He holds the rank of lieutenant-colonel, and is now Officer Commanding the Australian Intelligence Corps (W.A. division).
