AN OARSMEN'S GALA.
RACES TO POINT ERIN.
Saturday afternoon was busily spent by a large number of oarsmen belonging to the ? ve cl K£. BJn the Auckland Rowing Association. ; The numerous four-oar races of the association's annual gala were held under practically ideal conditions. Forty-two crews competed for handsome, trophies presented by Mrs. J. Clark, .wife of the president of the association. Mr. and Mrs. Clark were both unable to be present, . and were repreffPted by Mr, Gilbert Clark and Miss Clark respectively. After the races the trophies were handed to. the winners by Miss Clark.Mr. W.' G. Mason (chairman of the association) acted as starter, and Messrs. A. I. Farmer and G. H. Beston (vice-presidents) as judges. The various clubs held their internal trials first .in heats, and the best crews of the five clubs finally rowed in an interclub race. The following were the results of the various finals: — West End Club: B. J. Keane (stroke), W. Knox, R. Notton, and N. Casey, 1; C. A. Masßey (stroke), A. Rowlands, A. Coutts, and K. Todd, 2; C. Neary (stroke), W. De Audney. T. R. Aicken, and J. Verran, 3. The winning crew drew 'ahead early, and finished six lengths to the good. Second and third were well separated. Waitemata Club: D. Hadfield (stroke), C. Molesworth, E. Westbrook, and F. Nannestead, 1; G. A. Huddleston (stroke), T. Marshall, E. J. Kennedy and P. J. Mullan, 2; R. Gilmore (stroke), H. Jarvis, D. Steel, and H. Bishop, 3. Won easily by two lengths. Nicholson's crew rowed well, but stranded on the reef 1 at the point, the tide being on the ebb. St. George's Club: A. Linton (stroke). A J. Emery, H. Churchill, and P. S. GouldinK 1; F. 0 Gorman (stroke), C. Cozens, E. Thornton, and S. Scott, 2- L. McGrath (stroke), H. Laird, S. Stichbury, and A. Syers, 3. Linton, about half-way, picked up a four-length lead and • maintained it to the finish. The second and third boats finished within a couple of yards of each other. Auckland Club: Clarke (stroke), .Howard, Caradus. and Basham. 1; Bone (stroke), Cooke, Kirk,' and Hugill, 2.' Won by a length. North Shore Club: F. Bennett (stroke), J Gallivan, F. Mansell, and C. Bennett, 1- | E. Bow'ley (stroke), R. Russell, J. Paul,-and l J.. Wall. 2; W. Mcltwraith (stroke). G. Croll, F. Smith, and J. Baakerville, 3. Bennett's boat held the lead from the start, repulsing an attack by Bowley. and won by nearly a length. The third boat was about r two lengths ■ away.- . / Auckland Rowing Association's Final: West End (B. J. Keane stroke), 1; North Shore (F. Bennett stroke),- 2: St. George's (A. Linton stroke), 3: Waitemata (D. Hadfield stroke), 4; Auckland (Clarke stroke), 5. The'grand final of the day was less interesting than was expected, the crews tailing out disappointingly. West End won by two lengths.
