London, March 5. The married couple, Frederick and Maud Gould, who were arrested a fortnight ago and charged with having obtained and attempted to communicate certain information regarding the navy that was calculated to be of use to an enemy, again came up yesterday at Bow Street Police Court and were remanded.
Mr. Bodkin, K.C., for the prosecution, stated that a letter in Gould's letterbook to a correspondent in 1903 showed that his real name was Schroeder, and that he fought in the Franco-German warLater he visited most parts of Europe as a member of the secret service of a foreign Power.
Mr. Bodkin remarked that Gould had been a spy in Britain for many years, and had told a former schoolfellow that he was the agent of the German Government. Letters in his letterbook proved the payment of money and also a request for 200 marks (£10). Counsel further said that an official chart of Spithead, and drawings re.la.ting to the engineroom arrangements of a battleship, and also a gunnery book, were found in Gould's possession. INCRIMINATING DOCUMENTS. The residence at Southfields of Gould was searched by the police last month, when several incriminating document* relating to the navy were found. The woman, who was arrested at Charing Cross Station, had torn up a paper containing the address of the place to which she was going in Brussels. The police found the fragments, which when pieced together revealed the name Petersen. Gould stated that the woman was taking a message for him, but was ignorant of the nature of its contents. Gould is a cigar merchant and a British subject- The woman admitted her intention of taking the documents to Brussels, but denied any knowledge of the contents.
