• Stbitet, March -3. .", Details hate been received of a sensational tragedy at Apia, in the Samoan Group.
Four young native constables recently broke into the arms' chest at the gaol, stole revolvers and 300 rounds of ammunition, -and disappeared. Later, they visited the house of a • German planter named Trevirarras and told the manager, Schhtt, that they were searching for an escaped Chinaman. Schlitfr. replied' that there were no Chinaman on the plantation, and ordered them to leave. The desperadoes, in reply, fired a volley, fatally wounding botn Tre.virapus and Schlitt..
The Governor thereupon organised a punitive expedition, including a number of Europeans, who surrounded the murderers. A fierce exchange of shots, lasting several hours, followed, during which three of the murderers were ' shot dead and the other was captured. One of the attacking party, Herr Helli"e, was shot through the heart, while another, Herr Motzkus, was severely wounded. The captured .murderer was afterwards hanged. It is supposed that cowboy pictures, shown twice weekly, influenced the young desperadoes' minds.
