ATHLETICS.

THE AMERICAN ATHLETES.

NO RETURN VISIT.

The reasons for the American athletic team's inability to compete here on March 14 are explained in a letter from Mr. E. Peixotto, manager of the team, to the secretary of the Auckland Centre, Mr. Moss Ballin. Mr. Peixotto states that the team heard nothing of the carnival until just before their departure for Australia, and after discussing the proposal the athletes decided that to carry out their existing engagements they would have quite enough to do. To enable them to have competed at the meeting it would have been necessary to delay the Maknra about eight hours, and this would probably cause thorn to miss the steamer connection at Honolulu, thus compelling them to stay there a week at their own expense. They would also have had to continue training operations at Rotorua, and this they were not anxious to do, as the trip to Rotorua is to be given up to pleasure. Mr. Peixotto concludes by expressing regret at the inability of the team to compete again at Auckland, and on the fast Domain track.

By Telegraph.—Press Association.— (Recoired March 3, 8.30 p.m.) . London", March 3. At the Oxford sports yesterday Sproule, of Melbourne, won the three-miles races in 14m 555. This constitutes a record for the Oxford track. THE OLYMPIC GAMES. RAISING THE "FUNDS. A donation of £50 was received recently towards the £10,000 fund that is being raised in Australia to send a representative team to the next Olympic Games. The New South Wales Rugby Union, who are the holders of the Olympic championship in Rugby football, having won the title in 1908—the only occasion on which Rugby was included in the games— have decided to assist the fund in every way possible. They are approaching the New Zealand Union with a suggestion that the New Zealand team should play an extra match during its forthcoming tour in Australia next season, the whole of the proceeds to be devoted to the Olympic fund. Mr. Thomas Longworth, father of the champion swimmer, William Longworth, is a keen advocate of sending the Australian team to Berlin several weeks before the games actually commence," in order that they may be fully acclimatised*. He stated that he has frequently noted the form of swimmers on different days, and has proved that the atmospheric conditions have a marked effect upon performances. If a change of weather can affect a swimmer in his own country, Mr. Longworth argues it is very necessary that he should have every opportunity of getting used to an entirely new climate before being asked to race. The Federal Government is to be approached with a view to a grant being made to the national fund. M. Doumerge, the French Premier, recently informed a deputation of the French National Sports Committee that the Government had been advised bv the Budget Committee of a vote of £6000 for the games, and the delegates asked that the amount should be raised to £8000. The latter sum is within £2000 of the 4otal fund aimed at by Australasia.
