PLEA FOR TAURANGA. I
M (From the HERALD of February 17, ig M , A camsE to Tauranga.-Tauranga is much improved since 1857. Now, as then 1 the general aspect of the country is charm' ing; and much more land has been cleared and cultivated. Te Papa now assumes the character of a smiling, thriving village I Some, substantial and handsome cottar' have been erected; the central edifice with a somewhat imposing front and some architectural pretensions, having been built for a mission school-house but is at present occupied as a commissariat store Colonel Carey, commanding the expedition' and Colonel Morant, 68th Regiment con' jointly occupy a neat and comfortable cottage or. one side of the school house ■ a similar cottage on the other side, for' merly the residence of the R ev M Baker, being partitioned among Mr' Baker, the interpreter, Captain Smith' 43rd, Captain Rowles, 3rd Waikato R es ' ment, and several others. M r . jj Clarke, likewise, occupies a new ™2 pretty cottage close by. Archdeacon Brown has returned to his abode; Ca Pta - Sellars, of the Taurauga, has a 'neat cot" tage on the beach; Mr. Maxwell has „ store hard by; and Messrs. Foley and Simpson have canvas stores each, "at the entrance to the camp. Very prudently 0 and to the maintenance of good order and sobriety, no canteen is permitted. Wherefore, then, we ask again, is not the town and port of Tauranga pushed fo ward ? Wherefore does the military roadway, with the military posts of colonia." tion, remain in a state of unproductive abeyance ?
