MINING NEWS.

OCCIDENTAL CONSOLIDATED.

Dbthng North on the Occidental reef was commenced at the Occidental Consolidated mine, Thames, last week. A distance of 4ft was driven. Part of the reef was broken down, and showed some nicelooking ore. No gold was seen in it, however. Stoping was continued at the north end of the block. The reef looked favourable, and showed some nice patches of good mineral. A little gold could be seen in the ore broken in the south end of the stopes. Crushing the ore has been commenced at the Kuranui battery.

MOUNT WELCOME. The rise on the break was extended 7ft at the Mount Welcome mine, Coromandel, last week. This made a distance of 14ft completed from the drive. Driving in the east face was resumed, and sft was driven, making a total of 42ft from the main tunnel. A break was intersected, from which a large flow of water was issuing. The reef on the other side of the break was of a more definod nature. MOANATAIARI. As the air was getting somewhat light in the Moanataian mine, Thames, last week the contractors ceased work. They had completed 2ft over their last 100 ft contract. The mine manager suggests that the ventilation can be improved by putting down a Jin or lin pipe from the surface, and using a water jet to force the air along the pipes. What appeared to be a reef formation was struck. It was discharging a fair stream of water.

GOLDEN BELT.

During the past week operations at the Golden Belt mine, Nevesville, were confined to driving south in the intermediate level. An extension of 10ft was made, and the reef is now the full width of the drive. A good deal of water was coming from the reel, and the ore showed fair dish prospects. '

CARTHAGE. [BT WnaEOlttAPH.— ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Monday. The manager of the Carthage gold mines telegraphs that he has secured a return for the week of 30 ounces. Work was stopped fpr two days on account of floods, but no damage was done to the plant.
