BLACK HAND THREATS.

PADEREWSKI A VICTIM.

HEALTH BREAKS DOWN

RECITALS CANCELLED.

Times-Sydney Sun Special Cable. (Received January 19, 5.5 p.m.)

New York, January 19. The famous pianist, Paderewski, has cancelled his Pacific Coast recitals, and is now recuperating in a bungalow at Los Angeles, his health having completely collapsed in consequence of alleged blackmailing by members of the Black Hand.

The persecution culminated at Denver City in the end of December when the municipal hall, which had been engaged for a recital, was found plastered over with alarming posters threatening terrible reprisals unless Paderewski acceded to the Black Hand's demands. Paderewski played that evening, but broke down immediately afterwards.
