SHOP BROKEN INTO.

ABOUT £130 STOLEN.

SAFE BLOWN OPEN.

[BY TELEGRAPH.— ASSOCIATION.]

Pahiatda, Monday. ' A sensational burglary took place on the premises of Messrs. Clark and Manifold, drapers, Pahiatua, some time between the closing hour—nine o'clock—on Saturday evening, and 8 a.m. to-day. On entering the office, situated in the centre of the shop, shortly, after eight o'clock this morning, Mr. T. W. Manifold, one of the principals of the -firm, discovered that a safe containing about .€l3O in cash and cheques had been broken open and the contents stolen.

The burglary was evidently the work of a skilled cracksman. He removed the safe from its usual corner under the desk in the office, to a position near the middle of the floor and, in order to deaden the sound of the explosion, covered the floor with several mattresses, rugs, and hall curtains, which ho took from counters near hy. The door of the safe was blown clean open, the safe being practically ruined. A jemmy found near the safe had been used to prise open the back door of the shop, by which entrance had been obtained. No arrests have yet been reported.
