PROGRESS OF AUCKLAND.

Among tangible and unmistakable signs of prosperity is marked increase, in the capital values upon which rates are based. This increase, in the extended " City" of Auckland proves to be nearly £1,240,000 for the past year, the total capital value being now very nearly sixteen million sterling. A very large proportion of the increase is in actual improvement, and the entire amount is based upon a relatively conservative estimate, fur though opinions always differ as to the correctness of a public valuation, it is never suggested that property freely changes hands at anything less. The fact that the main increase is in the. city proper and not in the outlying city districts such as those which recently joined the. civic partnership should help to remove suburban doubts as to the wisdom of following their good example.
