The experimental plots arranged by the Agricultural Department are also looking «ery well just now, the sweet peas and r >?ps specially being in profuse bloom. The supply of water to the plots has pr-vi\i inadequate during the hot weather, *nd arrangements have U-en rcide for the layine of a much larger pipe, so that the ; lot, may b« kept green. They are a very valuable part of the Exhibition, and are visited by largo numbers of farmers, who are keenly interested in the various leeds that are grown, and the practical demonstrations of conclusions the Agricultural Department only reached after much ripenmenl The attendance at the Exhibition yesterday »as 6026, including 1423 season ticketholders. Cf those who paid at the gate 4349 were adults and 854 children. The otal attendance since the Exhibition opened runs into over 550,000. The Musical Programmes.
Music lovers agaiu fared well. The' 'iaual afternoon and evening performances were eiveij lw the hand, and the Christ"church Liedfrtafe! gave a very fine concert in the .xmcert hall at night. The oMemne hand programme inclined to the Popular tide, including selections from the Arcadians" and "The Pirates of Penzance." Corporal E. Reynolds gave * Piccolo solo, " Lillipution." In the afternoon Sergeant C. Ellis played the com* solo. " Rose Softly Blooming," and portions of several important musical works were delightfully rendered by the •10 ■• Twiuikowek s great work, 182, which has been given twice before by the band with great success will f* repeated orr Saturday evening with p\TT)technic effects. These will bo made speciailr effective and well timed by the moans of electrical firing. The programme submitted by the f'liristchurch Liedertafel last evening included a popular selection of part songs quartettes, solos, and instrumental items. The audience was somewhat larger than i the previous evening. Encores were frequent, and a double encore rewarded Messrs. Cookson, Vincent, March, and Millar for their rendering of the quartette. "In Maytime. • Sir. S. Hawker (rave a fin© interpretation of " Honour and Anns." and had to sing again. Mr. Q. E. March sang very tastefully. " Prince Ivan's Song," and Mr. J. F. Peake was heard in " Beloved Awake," and Mr. C. if Schwartz in "Adelaide." The part rones included 6everal favourite numbers. Mr. A. Worsley was accompanist, and also gave a pianoforte solo, which was en- ■ ored. The short season of the Liedertafel will be concluded this evening, when -.nother popular programme will be submitted. To-morrow night, and on Friday, and Saturday evenings the Maori boys, who walked from Te Kao, will give entertainments, consisting of songs, glees, hakas, and dances.
Tho painting by Mr. W. L. Wyllie, the famous marine artist, of the battleship New Zealand, has arrived, and will be hung in the art gallery as soon as possible. This picture is on loan from the New Zealand Government. Fireworks Displays. Wonderland, with its variety of side shows, if* regularly the gathering place of largo crowd*, who find entertainment to their taste in the lighter side of the Exhibition. The side shows have been kept in full running each afternoon, and the brilliantly lit park presents a specially lively and attactivc scone in the evenings. Considerable interest has been aroused by the winouncement that there will be two fireworks display? this month and two nest month. The "first will be on Saturday evening, 17th inst., and will be a fitting finale to the professional sports, which conclude that afternoon. The feature of '.lib display will be the rockets and shells, imi considerable expense is being incurred to provide an aerial display of unusual inlorwt and splendour. Next Friday will be a children's day. Tin.; moans that up till fptr o'clock children will be admitted at a charge of 3d, Those days are always specially interesting "nes at the Exhibition, the frolics of the i hildrem making a show in themselves. This concession to children will be made f-irtnightly in future. Instruction for Agriculturists. The demonstrations arranged by the .Agricultural Department are Deing anticipate! by country visitors with a good deal of interest. Demonstrations of orchard (,ra< tioc are given on Tuesday and Friday afternoons, from two to five, and lectures 'ii hcfkeopin;' on Mondays. A demonstration in the making of soft and fancy cheese --ill he given by Miss S. Davis to-morrow morning at eleven o'clock. The first judging of choose in the districts courts' competition has been completed by Mr. W. rhornton. Government cheese grader, but '■he re-sulta are not yet available. The amateur athletic meeting, to be held on the Ticket ground next Saturday afternoon, will be invested with special interest hv the presence of the American fe/ini The following week will also be nterejlinu from the athletic point of view •n arroin'! of the professional sports and ri'nf hand contest on Monday evening, Wednesday evening, and Saturday afternoon Thi.a will be the most important professional athletic and cycling fixture held :n the Dominion for some time.
