THE FRUIT SEASON.
SUPPLIES ABUNDANT.
LOW PRICES RULING.
The rain -which fell at the beginning of December, followed by the hot weather of the last two weeks, has had the effect of bringing on the fruit very quickly. At the present time there is a glut on the market, and the supply is exceeding the demand. Unfortunately the quality does not correspond with the increased quantity. Growers are apparently contenting themselves with sending into the market any and all of the fruit that they have on hand. Owing to the inferior quality of many of the consignments and to the large supply prices have been ruling exceedingly low of latetoo low in fact to be remunerative to the growers. There are signs, however, of an improvement in the market. Growers are realising that it pays them better in the long run to look after the quality rather than the quantity.
With a continuance of fine weather the present season should prove to be almost a record one for Auckland, as far as fruit is concerned. All kinds of tree fruits are coming on well, and the growers should have no difficulty in keeping the market fully supplied with fruit of the highest quality. The present week will probably see the last of the strawberries, the season for this favourite delicacy having been a remrrkably good one.
