THE EXHIBITION TOWER.
1 his is still tlio centre of attraction at the Exhibition, access to which is gained I'V tho Otis Lift, installed by Messrs. Turnhiill and Jones, Ltd., and is probably th* best working exhibit in tho whole of the Exhibition. The car has a capacity 'or 12 visitors, and runs at a speed of 220 ft per minute. Up to the present about ,4000 people haffl been convoyed in this lift to the tower, from which a view of the whole Exhibition Grounds is obkilled, as well as an exclusive view of the citv. suburbs, the Waitemata, and the islands of the Hauraki Gulf. Installed on the promenade*, between the north and eolith towers, is a telescope, with 4Jin lens, through which objects can be decorned at a distance of over 10 miles. During the day-time patrons have found it a very interesting pastime, whilst during tho moonlight evenings numbers of budding astronomers have shown great interest in the study of cur solar system. After seven o'clock the planets Saturn, and Mars can be seen plainly in the east, their real beauty being revealed to a wonderful degree through the telescope. Since the cabled report from Perth of the 1900 comet, being faintly visible to the telescope, many visitors to tho Exhibition have visited the tower for tho purpose of investigating the position of the comet. As there is no doubt that it will be plainly visible by means of the telescope from the tower," it will be very interesting to know wBo will have tho honour of being the first to locate it. No doubt the proprietors of the electric lift will commemorate the event in tomo manner. In any case it is intended to publish the name of the first individual locating the comet by means of the telescope.
