SECRET OF DISCOMFITURE.
OLD-FASHIONED METHODS.
Times-Sydney Sun Special Cable.
London, December 9.
Commenting on the fight, the Times to-day says: "The secret of our discomfiture- is partly due to the pigheaded way in which we cling to traditional methods. Carpentier won because he fought with brains, added to fists. The case of Wells is exactly typical of the present position of almost all branches of athletics in Britain. Until we learn the lesson we cannot hope to regain our old pre-eminence in the world of sport." The newspapers are filled with mournful articles on the decadence of English boxing. There is genera agreement that the art has been made too gentlemanly.
