LYTTELTON BY-ELECTION.
CHANCES OF CANDIDATES.
MR. LAURENSON UNATTACHED.
[BY ' telecraph.—own COMIESrONDE.VT.]
Christciicrch, Wednesday. Tue second ballot in the Lyitvlton byelection will He taken on Tuesday, next, and there is a strenuous week ahead of the two contestants, Messrs. Miller and McCombs.
The supporters of both candidates express themselves as confident. Everything depends, of course, on how the 1282 votes cast for Messrs. Laurenson, Thacker, and Radcliffo will bo placed, while there are also 1692 voters who did not go to the poll yesterday to bo reckoned with. The opinion is expressed that Mr. McCombs received every vote from his solid supporters yesterday, and may be expected to hold all of these in the second ballot. It is considered certain that the Government candidate will take a very largo proportion of the votes cast for Mr. Laurenson.
Mr. Miller has a handicap on yesterday's figures of slightly over 500 votes, and taking no account of tho 1692 votes unrecorded yesterday ho will require to capture about three-fourths of the votes recorded for the three unsuccessful candidates. Everything points to a very keen and close contest, the result of which it is idle to attempt to forecast. Mr. Laurenson, it may be mentioned, is taking no part in the second ballot, and is leaving his supporters a free hand.
