A largo mini be- were present, and resolutions were passed agreeing to the suggestions. A committee was formed to proceed with the work of raising funds. Mrs. Von Stunner, secretory of the Auckland branch of the Women's Political I Reform League, in outlining the suggested Plan of action, said that the women of >lhcr league ami, in her opinion, the women I -of Auckland as a whole, irrespective 0 , political opinion, desired to record in an ,; adequate manner, their appreciation of the i services of the farmers in maintaining law ' and order in the city. Their sympathy land gratitude was ; .]„ extended" to the , i tanners wives and families, who, at great , i inconvenience and loss, bore the responsiMities and labours of the men, and thus I enabled the work of the port-to bo carried l io,i with safety and dispatch. It was felt • that their gratitude should take some coni crete form, and it was proposed that a . scholarship or scholarships be endowed ' with a sufficient sum, to provide higher education for the children or the descend ' ants of the farmers. Mrs. Von Stunner •then proposed, "That this meeting of ; Auckland women deeply appreciate the ; patriotic action of the farmers of tho province in maintaining law and order I (hiring the recent industrial crisis, and ■J further, that we, the women of Auckland i : place on record our feelings of gratitude i to the women in the country for their .sacrifice during the absence of their busS bands and sons." This motion was carried unanimously. Mr. G. J. Garland, chairman of the Auckland Education Board, addressed the meeting on the question of scholarships I he senior and junior district scholarships' , he said, cost £40 a year for a period of SiT ye '.n They were of tho value of £10. with £30 boarding allowance, should the student have to live away from home. Junior national scholarship cost £10 ami £30, a senior national scholarship £20 and > £30. He suggested that a district scholarship -be at a cost of £40 a year,

and to maintain this it would bo necessary to raise a sum of £1000. The Citizens' Defence Committee had a sum of £2500 in hand, and ho- would advise the Ladies' Committee to raise £1000, and then apply to the Defenco Committee foe another £1000, and thus provide two scholarships. He did not know of a better way in which the money in the hands of the Defence Committee could bo spent. Ho did not think it would be difficult for the ladies to raise £1000 in the province. The following motion was then proposed and carried :— That a fund bo raised to provide higher education for as many farmers' children and descendants of farmers as funds will permit, and with a view of furthering the proposal, an active campaign bo promoted throughout the Auckland Province."

It was then decided to elect officers, and a committee to further the work, and the following wero appointed President, Miss Butler (principal of the Auckland Girls' Grammar School); vice-presidents, Mosdames R. Bedford and W. H. Parkes; secretary, Mrs. Von Stunner; treasurer, Mrs, J. p. Campbell; committee, Mesdames C. J. Parr, A. C. Caughey, A. Bent, G. Patterson, E. Anderson, R. A.
