The North Island had a very hollow victory over the South, winning every match. Unfortunately many of the best Sonthorn players were absent. This is the first year this event has been decided by match play, and it was generally voted a trjeai. improvement on the old system of medal round. Mrs Orbell played Miss Collins, and put up a much better fight; Miss Collins won, 3 up and 1 to play NEW ZEALAND LADIES' UNION. [BY TELEGRAPH. PRESS ASSOCIATION. J Napier, Monday. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Ladies' Golf Union was held to-night. Miss Rattray was reelected president, and Mrs Mtlleop re-elected secretary. It was decided to hold the next year's championship tournament in Dunedin, comencing on October 10. WANGANUI TOURNAMENT. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.! "Wangantti, Monday. The Wanganui golf championship meeting was continued to-day. In the semi-finals of the senior championship W. Ralph (Auckland) defeated Harold 1 up on the 19th, and Lewis beat Duncan 2 up and 1 to play. In the final Ralph beat Lewis 1 up, winning the championship. MAUNGAKIEKIE LADIES' CLUB. Walker won with a net score of 65 strokes for 12 holes, Mrs. Noakoa and J. Banks finishing second with 68. In the men's championship, the following games have been played :— First Round: A. T. Kenrick beat 8. Bishop, 6 up and 6 to play; S. Morpeth beat G. Waymouth, 8 up and 6 to play; W M. Jackson beat T. Baber, 3 up and 2 to play; T. Morpeth beat E Banks, 6 up and 6 to play. Hanna, 102—16—86; W. W Main gey, 101— 87; A. F. Burton, 1092089. There were 14 competitors. The remainder did not return their cards. The approaching and putting competition (ladies mly), for Messrs Redgrave and Kirby's trophy also took pla<-o during the week The conditions were: Three balls to be holed out, ono from 60yds, one from 46yds, and one from 30yds. The results were as follows: Miss D. Edwards holed out in 9 strokes, Mrs McGlashan 10, Mies Clayton 10, Mrs. Montgomery 11, Mrs. Kenny 11, Mrs. Lamb 11, Miss Bossons 12.
THE IRISH CHAMPIONSHIP.
SIXTY-YEARS-OLD WINNER.
London, September 9. The Irish open golf championship has been won by A. C. Palmer, who is 60 years of ago, and did not begin to play until he was 40 The writer of a special article in the Times says that it costs £100 a year to play golf in Britain.
