MISHAP TO TAVIUNI.
AGROUND IN BLUFF CHANNEL,
REFLOATED IN HALF AN HOUR.

Invercarciix, Thursday. While the steamer Taviuni was entering Bluff channel at 9 a.m. to-day, and was abreast of No. 1 beacon, the steeringengine refused to act, and the vessel grounded on the northern shore, where she lay for about half an hour before being floated off with the assistance of a.tug. The Taviuni, which has a cargo of coal from Westport, was in charge of PilotCaptain Hamilton when the accident happened. The amount of damage if any has not been ascertained, but it is understood that the bottom at the place where the vessel grounded is smooth and free from hard substances.
A preliminary inquiry into the circumstances will be opened by the Collector of Customs at 10 a.m. to-morrow.
