A FINE PERFORMANCE. [BY telegraph,—-own CORRESPONDENT.] Cheistchurch, Thursday. Chatting about the open golf championship at Sandringham links, near Melbourne, Mr. D. Hood, the well-known Christchurch coach, said that Ivo Whitton's average of 754 was a remarkably good one. It alone demonstrated Whitton's abilities as an amateur player of the first rank. Lefevre, another Victorian amateur, who was Whitton's runner-up, also did remarkably well with an average of 76i. Clements, the Christchurch player, with 82} had a vtry creditable average considering his unfamiliarity with Australian courses. Speaking of the green at Sandringham, Mr. Hood said that ho had not had personal acquaintance with it, but he understood that it was long and testing, though there were specially good lies through the green. All the greens at Sandringham indeed had excellent reputations amongst players in. Australasia. This was the result of the expenditure of vast sums of money, and of unlimited pains.
Mr. lies, professional coach of the Shirley Golf Club, stated that Mr. Ivo Whitton, who was about 21 years of age, was very, free and easy in his play, and had a deliberate style. He wasted no time over his shots, and always seemed to have his mind made up. and to know what club to use before he got to his ball. He learned his golf in Victoria at the Metropolitan Golf Club, and bad played since he was a young schoolboy. He had been made a life member of the Metropolitan Club after winning the open championship the previous year. Mr. lies stated that he considered Mr. Whitton one of the finest amateur golfers who had ever played in Australia. He played no other game, and put in all his spare time on the links all the year round.
