NAPIER STREET SCHOOL.
NEW INFANT DEPARTMENT.
A great many parents, pupils, and other interested persons were present at the formal opening of the infant department of the Napier Street School yesterday afternoon.
In performing the ceremony, Mr. G. J. Garland, chairman of the Auckland Board of Education, congratulated the City Schools Committee on securing such a particularly attractive building. He congratulated the board's architect, Mr. Farrell, on the design, contrasting the new erection with the old upper school beside it. The present main building was erected in 1887, at a cost of £2196. It contained 10 classrooms and 6304 square feet of floor space. The original site for the school, two roods four perches in area, cost £490. The new infant department cost £1770, and contained three rojims to accommodate in all 250 children.
Mr. F. E. N. Gandin spoke shortly, giving the history of the inception of the infant school scheme. The Mayor (Mr. C. J. Parr) and Mr. E. K. Mulgan alsp addressed the gathering.
