THE MARRIAGE LAWS.
DECEASED WIFE'S SISTER.
At a meeting of the bishops of the Province of New Zealand, held in Wellington recently, the following resolution was passed:-—" That, in view of the divergence between the marriage laws of the State and those of the Church, the bishops hereby declare that the law of the Church remains unaltered, and desire to impress upon the clergy that they are not at liberty to .solemnise marriages within the prohibited degrees." Marriage with one's deceased wife's sister or deceased husband's brother is permitted by the law of the land, but not by the Church although there have been instances of such marriages being solemnised by Church of England clergymen.
