DISEASE IN THE COUNTRY.
CONDITIONS AT KAIHU.
The only country cases reported to the district health office yesterday , were two Maoris at Kaikohe. Inspector Grieve, ofl the 'Health Department, has just returned from ; Kaihn, north of Dargaville, ; where two severe cases are in isolation and five others are convalescent. AH are Maoris.
Hie Health Department has found the problem facing it at Kaihn a difficult one owing to the way in which the Maoris and Europeans axe intermixed. The bulk of the sick are Maori workers, and the disease was taken at the Kairara gumfields. There the. conditions of living - are described as being insanitary, the men's residences consisting of' mere shanties. ' . Two segregation camps have b?en organised at Kaihohe , and Kaihu. The health inspectors in the district are having ah. arduous time, working late and early, and it will probablv be found necessary to add to the inspectorial staff. Another difficulty is trnnscort, and in this connection, Inspector Grieve had to convey two patients, who were very ill with the disease, on a sledge to the Kaihu isolation camp. .." -; " ".:■.;•■"*;■;'
