; GREY LYNN STREETS. QUESTION OF MAINTENANCE. : The City Council met last, night, the deputy-Mayor (Mr. John Court) presiding. There were also present: Messrs. R. S. Briggs, P. M.. Mackay, A. Hall Skelton, R. T. Michaels, J. Trevethick, A. J. Entrican, P. J. Nerheny, H. N. Bagnull, F. E. N. Gaudin, G. Read, H. D. Heather, J. M. Mennie, R. Tudehope, J. C. Gleeson, and Miss Melville. In reply to a request from the Grey Lynn Borough Council to be permitted j. to maintain its own side of Ponsonby ' Road from the Great North Road to Richmond Road, and its own side of the Great North Road from Karangahape Road to the intersection of Williamson Avenue, the Works Committee recommended: :' ; /' (1) That the agreement between the City, and Grey Lynn borough, dated December 18, 1905, vesting the control of Ponsonby Road, along the boundaries of the city and the borough .from the alignment of Karangahape Road to the centre of Richmond Road, be terminated. (2) That the request of the Grey Lynn Borough Council for permission to maintain its own side of Great North Road from Karangahape Road to the intersection of Williamson Avenue be granted. The recommendations were adopted. • Further, it was agreed to pave the area on the Grey Lynn side of Ponsonby Road and Great North Road, at the intersection of Ponsonby Road, Karangahape Road, Great North Road, and Newton Road with wood blocks simultaneously with the council's work in Karangahape Road. The cost, (estimated ,at £130) will be debited to the Grey Lynn .Council. • WATERFRONT WORKS. BOARD AND COUNCIL. ' It was decided to notify the Harbour Board that Fanshawe Street is being proceeded with as fast as circumstances allow; that Hobson Street Wharf approach will be taken in hand as soon as the board removes its material from the end nearest the wharf; and that the sewer work is being undertaken in Beaumont Street preparatory to the formation of the street. . ' \ . - ;,' Reporting as to details of the agreement between the Mayor and the chairman of the Harbour Board regarding the rails in Lower Queen Street, the city engineer said it should be made clear that the Railway Department and the Harbour Board should be held responsible for the maintenance of any tarred macadam or asphalt paving laid between the rails and outside them. The board should also maintain the asphalt or stone sett crossings at the approaches to the Central and Queen Street Wharves, where laid over the northern part of Queen Street. Further, the board would require to pay for and maintain all vehicular crossings laid over the northern footpath at the approach to the wharves, in accordance with the ,by-laws. The board is to be informed accordingly. ILL-LIGHTED VEHICLES. I SOURCE OF DANGER. The subject of inadequately-lighted vehicles running on the streets and' suburban roads after sunset, was brought tinder the notice of the council by the Tramwaymen's; Union. ; The union desired that the council should make it compulsory for all vehicles to carry a rear light, and where the vehicle was loaded with lengths of timber or- iron, that a light should be attached to the extreme end.!;;" Accidents ; were continually being narrowly averted through insufficient lights. : : ' The Finance Committee is to deal with the matter. . STREET IMPROVEMENTS. A MUDDY ROAD. The muddy condition of Factory Road, Parnell, formed the tenor of a complaint received from the manager of Millar's West Australian, Hardwood Company, Limited, at Mechanics' Bay. , , Id a report on the matter, the city engineer stated that the condition of the .road had been the cause of much correspondence on many '.occasions. Although in a bad state, it would be inadvisable to spend much on the'road, in view of the new road to be made in this locality. The road would be thoroughly cleaned up. In six months' tim© the street wouid be closed, and it would be quite useless to spend money upon it. , , -" SUGGESTED RESERVE. FOR PARNELL RESIDENTS. A proposal has been made by Mr. R. E. Isaacs, of Auckland, that the vacant section at the corner.of Manukan Road and St. George's Bay Road, Parnell, might be acquired by the council and formed into a reserve. The Parnell residents would welcome such a reserve in their part of the" city. The Works Committee is to consider the matter. PLUMBERS' LICENSES. QUESTION OF CHARGES. The question of plumbers' licenses was placed before the council by the Master Plumbers' Union, which forwarded a resolution passed by the union to the effect that the matter of charging for licenses to plumbers be deferred by the council for three months. The council referred the matter to the Electric and Water Committee. MISCELLANEOUS. STREET IMPROVEMENT LOAN. In reference to the street improvement, loan, the city engineer (Mr. W. E. Bush) reported that Elizabeth Street was not included in the recent allocation of £8880, and until further loan moneys were avail able permanent work could not be 1 done. The street would be inspected, and if it were in need of immediate temporary 'repairs, these would be executed. Both matters were referred to the Works Committee. On the recommendation of the. Finance and Legal Committee, it was deeded to instruct the city solicitor to draft a bvlaw providing for the licensing of street musicians. The tender of J. Ellingham (£74) was accepted for book-canes for the council's library. A request from the Remuera Road Board for the council's support to the taking of a tally of the traffic passing over the Tamaki Bridge, Panmure, and sharing the cost incurred with the various local bodies co-operating in the matter, was referred to the city solicitor. With regard to inquiries as to the formation of Park Crescent, it was decided that as the street in question is mot dedicated the council cannot undertake any work therein. On tl recommendation of the Works Committee it was decided to have the city power-station site paved, at a cost of £1300, or 16s per square yard. The kerbing and channelling of the Manukau Road, Parnell, was approved, at a cost estimated by the city engineer of £1299. This amount will 'be apportioned as follows:— and renewing old kerbing and channelling (2706 ft), £474; new dressed kerbing and channelling, £825. -.
