AUCKLAND WEEKLY NEWS
INCORPORATION OF GRAPHIC. "FIRST AMALGAMATED ISSUE. PUBLISHED THIS WEEK. This week's issue of the Auckland Weekly News incorporates the Weekly Graphic and the New Zealand Mail. The Auckland Weekly News has for years enjoyed the reputation of being the finest illustrated periodical published in the Southern Hemisphere. In illustrated journalism the best results can only be secured at high initial cost. On its wide circulation the' Weekly News, has been able to maintain a much higher standard than has been possible in the pages of its less popular rivals. ■ The amalgamation extends the already wide field covered by the Weekly News, and furnishes opportunities for further improvement in the scope and character of the publication and for "increasing its value without cost to the subscriber. The paper is to be permanently enlarged to provide for the inclusion of the best features of the Weekly Graphic, and every opportunity will be taken by the adoption of the most modern processes to keep the illustration department ahead of all rivals. The illustrated section of the current issue contains a magnificent collection of photographs.' A series of illustrations deal with the close of the visit of H.M.S. New Zealand. The great warship is depicted passing out of "the waters of the Waiteinata on towards the completion of her world tour. Numerous other views show the New- Zealand- being drawn out from the wharf, and the concluding scenes of her stay in Auckland. These illustrations are more of souvenir than pictorial interest, though as photographic reproductions they leave little room for improvement. There is always a general interest in the opening of Parliament. Despite an order prohibiting ■ photographers from entering the grounds, during the : opening ceremony; an excellent view of the arrival of the Governor has been obtained. A companion picture in the form of a burlesque on the opening- of the House will undoubtedly meet with the amused approval of the public. . ■; '~;:-.;: ( _ Numerous snapshots of the King's College Old Boys' reunion illustrate the sports gathering at Auckland last Saturday. Wellington undergraduates, grotesquely clothed for capping day, provided immense ;. amusement to the . people of . the capital city: their procession through Post Office Square is duly illustrated. Amongst numerous other topical subjects dealt with are the military sports at Hawera,: the presentation of the new Speaker (Mr. F. W. ■ Lang) to the Governor, torpedo practice on H.M.S. New Zealand .off Akaroa, Ruapehu, the flight of an aeroplane built and flown by Wellington men, Sir. Joseph Ward in the monoplane presented to New Zealand, scenes in the King Country, numerous portraits, caricatures, and other interesting matter.
