SCARLATINA OUTBREAK.
ON STEAMER CORINTHIC.
THIRTEEN CASES REPORTED.
—PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
Wellington, Tuesday. Shortly after leaving Capetown on her voyage from London to New Zealand', the White Star liner Corinthic was found to have - a rather serious outbreak of scarlatina on board amongst the third-class passengers. It is presumed that some of the passengers who went ashore at the Cape brought back the infection,- for at that time an epidemic of scarlatina and scarlet fever was sweeping over the city, many hundreds of both natives and whites being infected. . In all 13 third-class passengers contracted .the malady, and the ship's doctor (Dr. L. W. Bradshaw) had his hands full.
With great promptitude, for which he afterwards earned the gratitude of the whole, ship's company, Captain Hart ordered the isolation of all patients, and quarters, which were guarded jealously day and night, were set apart aft, where the patients were thoroughly cared for. On her arrival at Wellington to-day the Corinthic was boarded by the port health officer (Dr. Pollen), and his unusually long inspection ,in the stream told. of something being amiss. The vessel berthed at the Queen's Wharf, and for two hours was subjected to a thorough fumigation. The i 600-odd passengers were allowed off the ship, but nobody was allowed on board, and the patients were removed in ambulance vans to the isolation ward of the Wellington Hospital. There is one young man, about 19 years of, age, but . the other patients are all under 14 years. \
