The Union Company's steamer Waipori arrived at Lyttelton last Friday morning after a somewhat lengthy cruise. She took a cargo of timber from Kaipara to Melbourne and Sydney, and after discharging went to Newcastle and loaded coal and hardwood for Fijian ports. The Waipori called at Suva, Navua, and Levuka, and was then ordered to proceed in search' .of * the disabled • American four-masted barquentine Lyman D. Foster, which had been dismasted in a hurricane. The Waipori proceeded to. Kumbara, but information having been - received that a small steamer, the Ripple, had taken the barquent-ne in tow, the collier went to Levuka. and Penang. As the Ripple could not handle the disabled sailer the Waipori finally' took her in tow, at Tootoia. She was an awkward charge, however, as she had lost her rudder and was completely water-logged. She had lost about 300,000 feet of • deck-load, her four masts had gone, and her cabin was gutted. The tow was a most difficult one, as the Lyman D. Foster charged about in a most violent manner, sometimes running away to port and then back to starboard, throwipg heavy strains on the towing hawsers.. By skilful and careful manoeuvring, however, Captain Baron was able to get the disabled ship safely to Suva, where the task of taking her in pas* the reef was adroitly performed. The Waipori subsequently returned to Newcastle, where she loaded coal for Lyttelton. .".-.• SILVERASH FOR BUNKERS.
