TITIRANGI'S CHARMS.
NEW NIHOTUPU DRIVE.
FOUR MILES TO BE FORMED.
OTHER IMPROVEMENTS.
A visit of inspection to the City Council's reserves at Titirangi was made yesterday by the Mayor (Mr. C. .J. Parr) and the members of the Titirangi Reserve Committee of the City Council. A tour was made of that portion of the Nihotupu pipe track along which the council is about to construct a road of sufficient width for motor traffic. It is, as previously explained, proposed to ultimately form the road right through from Titirangi to the West Coast road beyond the Nihotupu Falls, but .for the present a section of the road extending some four miles from the reservoir at Titirangi will be taken in hand. Mr. Jackson, engineer to the Waitemata County Council, has been entrusted with the supervision of the work, and it is expected that a tender will be shortly accepted. The road will follow the pipe track, and loops for passing and turning will be provided at convenient distances along the road as well as at the end of it. The Mayor states that it is hoped to have the work put in hand shortly, and to have it completed before the opening of the Exhibition. It is proposed to provide work for those settlers who usually devote a portion of their time to road work, but who are at present without any employment of this kind. The Waitemata Council is now considering the question of extending the branch road from the Waikumete-Waiata-rua Road, known as Carter's Road, for a distance of about half a mile, thus enabling a junction to be made at Cochrane's Saddle, about three miles from Titirangi, with the City Council's proposed new road. -
The committee also visited the bush park lately presented to the council by Mr. H. Atkinson, and it was decided to recommend the council to name it "Titirangi Park." The council has constructed a new road to the summit of Mount Atkinson on the southern side, and there are thus now two roads by which the ascent of that reserve may be made. - The committee has decided to recommend the appointment of a caretaker for the reserves, including the new road and pipetrack- This official will be given the powers of a' special constable, and during the summer time he will patrol the reserves on horseback in order to • guard them against damage by fire or otherwise. It is proposed to construct special fire-places for the use of visitors. In the winter the caretaker will be employed in constructing and repairing tracks and any other necessary work on the reserves. The various recommendations of the committee will be brought before the council to-morrow evening. ■■■'■' -. ■ -/ - \ ■ "There is no doubt that Titirangi and Nihotupu * are going to ; form a great 'boom' pleasure resort during the coming summer and Exhibition periods," said the Mayor, in speaking to a Herald representative last evening. The motor-drive to Titirangi and back, the Mayor pointed out, is likely to become -a favourite run. Some 400 Australian doctors, for instance, are expected to meet in conference here during the Exhibition, and it is probable that a motor trip to Titirangi will form part of their sight-seeing programme.' ..." Efforts will be made by the City Council to induce the Waitemata County Council and the other local bodies concerned to improve the main and branch roads leading to TitirangL*_'
