WAIHI GRAND JUNCTION.
SHORTAGE OF MINERS.
The general manager of the Waihi Grand Junction mine (Mr. W. F. Grace), who is at present on a visit to Auckland, stated last night that the company is still handicapped in its operations for want pi miners.. There are, he said, 1 still 150 less skilled miners at work than were employed in the mine before the strike. Surface hands, casual labourers, and mill hands are available in abundance. Owing to the shortage of miners, however, it is quite impossible to increase the tonnage output from the mine until more labour is obtained.
Mr. Grace pointed out that the policy of the company had been a progressive one, and that provision had been made in the way of plant and machinery for greatly increasing development work. All this new plant was at present lying idle, owing to the lack of miners.
I, ROSS GOLDFIELDS. The value of shares in the Ross Goldfields property has shown a decline- during the past few days. Last week they were sold at 6s 6d, whereas yesterday they were exchanged at 5s 5d and 5s 6d. The decline was mentioned by telegraph to the chairman of directors (Mr. G. H. Davis), who replied yesterday as follows :—" Nothing wrong at the mine, the only trouble being the market." .i.. ;
BREMNER'S FREEHOLD. The manager of Bremner's Freehold mine, Coromandel, reports that the rise has holed through to the surface, a distance of 40ft. In the top level Tiernan's reef has opened out to 3ft between the walls. There is a band of heavilymineralised quartz in the footwall, which looks promising. The footwall is composed of quartz stringers and country.
RISING SUN. In the Rising Sun mine. Karangahake, all hands in the low level during the past week have been engaged in repairing some of the decayed timber, and cutting out on the western side of the drive at the proposed rising point. This work is now completed, and rising will be started on Monday next with the object of connecting the low level with the winze. The winze has been sunk another 3ft, making a total depth of 98ft from the floor of No. 2 level. The reef at the bottom of the winze is about 12in in size, and gives a good prospect of gold in the dish.
