NEW GOVERNMENT PURCHASES, [by r temghaph.—own correspondent.] Wellington, Wednesday. The Government has just, concluded negotiations for the purchase of two estates to ,; be subdivided for closer settlement- . Lake Run at Tophouso, in the Howard ■£ Survey District, Nelson, and a property ' near ■ Fortification Hill, Waimeheka, in the Southland district. The Tophouse property, which was part of the estate of f the late Mr. John Kerr, consists of 2946 i acres of freehold and 2786 acres of Crown | leasehold. It has been purchased princi- T pally to givo access to Crown lands in the . Howard Block now being opened for settle- -'' merit. The country is suitable for pastoral , . and agricultural purposes, and when it is Z subdivided with portions of the Crown | land, the settlers will have in their hold- £| ings a . fair amount of open grass land on g which to begin profitable farming once. This is a very considerable advantage -to_■;■.,■ settlers on bush lands. The Government J is to have immediate possession. c,*"_i The other block, in the Southland district, is of 3613 acres.
