UNIVERSITY COLLEGE COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Auckland University College Council was held yesterday afternoon, the chairman (Sir Maurice O'Rorke) presiding. There were also present: The Revs. W. Beattyand J. H. Simmonds, Dr. : W. C. W. McDowell, Messrs. G. L. Peacocke, T. W. Leys, T. U. Wells and G. J. Garland.
A letter was received from Mr. H. A. E. Milnes stating tnatptri the writer's opinion, it was a pity there were no extension lectures in connection with the university. These would keep the general public in touch with higher education. He realised that it would be too late to institute a series of such lectures this year, but offered to , give one on a subject named if the council would approve it and appoint a chairman. - It was decided to thank Mr. Milnes for the offer and to approve of same, Mr. Peacocke being appointed to act as chairman. The question of. instituting a series of extension lectures was referred to the Professorial Board for an opinion regarding the suggestion.
The remainder of the meeting was devoted to hearing a deputation from the council's Whakatane endowment land tenants, in connection with the renewal of their leases. The discussion on the matter appears in another column. ; The meeting adjourned until Monday next. - - ,■. '.
