ST. HELENS HOSPITAL.

— ♦ —■ •■■ 7, The inquiry into the administration of St. Helens Maternity Hospital has revealed little that could not shave been ascertained by a simpler and quicker process. The ' chief hindrance to good work at the hospital, as shown by- the Commissioner's report, is the unsuitability of the build- 1 ing. This is so well known toS- the Minister and the Department that active -l efforts have been made to: secure a site for a new hospital. 7 The Commissioner comments .-; on the treatment of • individual-cases, but he accepts the mortality \. and • sickness - returns as ; indicating that t the ■ general management of ithebinstitution has been satisfactory. In the circumstances :■: it is 5 surprising that results so generally good as to call ; rather for commendation than cen- ' sure have been secured. Much capital was made of the humanitarian ' work of the late Government in ' establishing the St. Helens Hos- ' pitals, but at no time was any great ', concern shown by those who claimed ' credit for their foundation to see 1 that the hospitals were equipped for ! the treatment of the many suitable patients seeking; admission. •: -. The Auckland hospital 7 has' not been . singular in this respect. The administration of the whole ' scheme ■ from the commencement was ; disappointing to many of >: those who 1 were led to expect help from the r establishment of the institutions. If 1 the Commission leads to the hospitals being placed on a footing nearer . to the expectations raised at their : foundation it will have accomplished a tangible result. , , '
