KAURI GUM RESERVATIONS.
WASTE OF GOOD FARMING LAND. [BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Whangarei, Friday. A burning question- in the North is the position that has arisen in regard to kauri gum reservations," and: the "way in which these locked-up areas retard settlement. . The position is that in the past in the various counties huge tracts ,of country have been declared reserves. In soma instances the kauri gum has been worked out of the land, and in other instances the. local bodies claim that areas were included which were never gum-bearing So acute has the position become- that recently tho Bay of Islands County Council requested the Government to lift the reservation from all lands, under their jurisdiction in order that the settlement of areas, which in many cases were ideal for agricultural purposes, might not be retarded. ■ , The same opinion is held by the vv hangarei County Council, and ai a meeting held to-day it was decided to request all Northern county councils to act in unity in an endeavour, as a primary step towards the ultimate object, to get the Government to classify all the North Auckland kauri gum reservations.
