Nixb men, who were arrested -pn recent Saturday evenings during the progress of meetings held by the Passive Resistors' Union at the Clock Tower, in Manchester Street, appeared in the Magistrate's Court on various charges to-day. The cases were heard by Mr. T. A. B. Bailey, S.M. Cuthbert Leo Bearey was charged with being an idle and disorderly person, in that be placed himself in Manchester Street on Saturday, March 29. for the purpose of gathering alms. Mr. J. Cassidy appeared for Bearey, who pleaded not guilty. Before evidence was taken the magistrate asked Mr. Cassidy if ho would admit that a collection was taken. Mr. Cassidy : Yes. I wilt admit that, but not that ho collected alms. ; Constable Packer said that at a meeting at the Clock lower on March 29 a man named Marrell announced that hate would be taken round amongst the crowd, " as wo require funds to carry out our work, and to save our speakers from going to gaol." Accused then went round with a hat and took up a collection. Constable Poole also saw the collection taken up by Bearey, but his evidence differed from that of the previous witness in that Constable Poole said that it was Bearey who appealed for funds. The magistrate remarked that the collection had been taken up in an orderly manner, and accused bore a reputable character. Mr. Bailey said that in these circumstances he could not brand the accused under this class of criminal. The charge was dismissed, and charges against Fredrick R. Cooke arid James R. Worrell, of assisting Bearey in •*' gathering alms," were withdrawn. Harold Edenton wa3 charged with causing an obstruction at the Clock Tower on March 15, and the police asked for sureties of the peace. -Jtte was bound over to keep".the peace for three months in one surety of £20, and was also fined £4 for causing an obstruction;, For having delivered addresses at the Clock Tower, inducing a crowd to collect, and thus causing an obstruction, Cuthbert Leo Bearey was fined £5, and Edward J. Howard, Paddy. Chaa. Webb, Fred Burgoyno, W. E; J. Maguire, Fred R. Cook, and Jas. McCulloch were each fined £2.
