FIRE IN QUEEN STREET
OUTBREAK IN GROWER'S ' SHOP. FLAMES PROMPTLY SUBDUED. ; DAMAGE BY, WATER. ESTIMATED AT £2500. A yms occurred in the business premise of Messrs. Robert Row, general providers 1 , in Lower Queen Street, opposite.the chief Post Office, shortly aftei eleven ocjock last evening. The feature of the Outbreak was the fine work of the city fire brigade, the members of which sub. dued the flames at an early stage, and thus . saved what must have otherwise been an even more serious fir© than that wUieh * occurred on the opposite side of tiw street a week previously. , ; . The building is a two-storey/ brick structure,, with wooden floors and lining, find adjoins a restaurant. At 11.18 p.m. two wharf laboarera noticed flames and smoke issuing from the roof, and they immediately gave the alarm fwm tbe box at the cornar of Queen and Quay Streets. The brigade arrived on the scene four minutes afterwards, and promptly had throe leads of hose on to the : fire.lt %aa found) thai the flames proceeded from the wholesale department in the upper storey, «rhere there was a largo stock of toys and ironmongeiy. The outbreak was practically subdued within a few minutes of the arrival of the brigade, but- not until 'a groat deal of damage had been dono to the stock,by water. In extinguishing the fire upstairs the brigade was forced to allow a great deal of water to, find its way into the office and the retail department downstairs, where a large Btock of groceries and hardware was situated. The actual damage to the building by firo however was trivial.

The insurance on the stock amounts to between £4000 and £5000 in the Commercial Union office; and the building, which m owned by the occupiers, '■■ is insured in the Alliance office for £3500. \ * - No cause can be assigned for the outbreak; .
