The annual meeting of the New Zealand Draughts Association was held at Gore on Tuesday, March 25, when the officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows;— President, to be elected by central executive; vice-presidents/ Messrs. P. a Gray and A. Broning (Gore), W. Brownleo (Havelock); central executive, ' Mosaic. A. R. Caldons, J. M.; Button, F. Keemus, J. A. Boreham, D. A. Brodle, J.. Abcrnethy, and F. E. J. Smith (Wellington). The championship tourney tor 1914 was offered to Auckland. Jo is anticipated it will be held there during-.Exhi-bition time.- Westport and Nelson offered to accept tho 1915 tourney. In this connection we havo been asked by Mr. McKay to state that a meeting of Auckland draughts players will-be held In the social hall of the Worklngmen'a Xflub on Friday evening, April 11, at eight o'clocS, to dlsouss tho advisability of holding the next cham; pionßhlp tourney in Auckland. If the meeting decides to accept the association's offer a committee will be appointed and other preliminaries settled aa far as possible. All players arc invited t<» attend. • ,N,Z. DRAUGHTS CHAMPIONSHIP. Mr. James Gardiner has won the tournament at Gore and with it tho draughts championship, of the Dominion, a silver cup (the gift of Mr. W. Laington, of the Worklngmen'a Club), 20 guineas. Mr. Frank E. HUliker, of Dunedln, last year's champion, took eecond prise (»13), on<* Mr. D. C. Calderwood, of Huntly, third prize (£8). This is the third: time Mr. Gardiner has won the coveted.honour. Hifl other years were 1901 and 180«. Following is a list of-Jnew Zealand champions since the formation of the Draughts Association:— ■■■ .-■,,. 1836-J. A. Boreham. 1904—Jas. Gardiner. 1897-J. A. Borebam. 1908-F. E. Hilliker. 1898— J. A. Gardiner Our telegrams styled this event the / Austrslasian draughts championehlp!" In passing we may observe that there were no competitors from Australia! At the same time (Easter) a contest was commenocd in Sydney (N.S.W.) ,tmder the samo title. Wo gather from Australian exchanges that there were no competitors from New Zealand 1 In the course of a week v we Bhall '< probably know that there are two Australasian draughts champions! Could anything.be more grotesque? The sooner the New Zealand Draughts Association takes the dignified course of withdrawing from the Australasian D.A, the better lfc will be for all concerned. These puerile wrangles make the authorities look ridiculous in the eyes of the world. If there is really any object la finding s\ champion of Australasia, the only sane course, under existing circumstances, seems to be for the two champions to play, a match for iho i title. -■ r
