The disaster arising out of the floods and the fire in the Ohio districts is described as having assumed the proportions of the San Francisco earthquake in 1906. | The loss of life has not been definitely ascertained, but it .is now placed at various figures up to about 2000..
SOOOv The fire raged fiercely in the business portion of the town for some time, and 21 business places were destroyed. It has, however, now been extinguished. The blizzard prevented it spreading any more. Several ' scores ,of ' people perished in : the flames. _ ; Yesterday's „ heavy blizzard has been renewed and driving; snow is falling on the flooded and partly burned town. Raging Torrents in the Streets. ■"• The water is still in the streets to a depth of 20ft, and it is impossible | to render aid to the people, boats being unable to live rin . the, raging ; torrents. . ; . . The, hundreds of relief workers in Dayton are ; helpless in the face of new disasters every hour. - . v The latest estimate of the deathrollv is 1500. ; Bodies Stacked Three Deep. Dead bodies are stacked three •deep along the river banks, where recovered. ' A hundred ' persons who took refuge in the workhouse became . semihysterical ~ when flames > threatened them. - Their peril is not immediate. Prisoners ; in•;v the gaols are ; half frantic : and are appealing for release. ( ; Five Hundred.
