ALLEGED CUSTOMS FRAUDS. , REMARKABLE SCHEME.MelbotonEj March, 14.' ; An investigation into the methods pra* ?;,;'; tised by Heath, the trusted officer of the Permewan .Wright Company (who-is alleged to have defrauded the firm of be* tween £1500 and £2000 by means of Cum toms frauds, and who has" disappeared)* reveals a remarkable scheme. < It is alleged . that instead of a cheque for duty J being • paid at the Customshouse and \ the goods, taken delivery, of, a different set of. documents would be made out, representing that some were goods in transit to anbther country, and should be dealt with. in bond. i The device adopted in order to get these >: out of Customs control without paying duty was to stop at a secret^ depot on thewwary r <j from one vessel to another and empty the ;'.- goods into other cases, which were, got : - up to represent the original cases. The V latter were then filled with old bricks and V> rubbish and placed aboard outward-bound ,' vessels, addressed to fictitious . firms in other ports. The goods themselves, which were carefully packed in the secret depot) in the' cases similar to the original ; cases, were delivered to the importers. The Cua» * toms recovered from- New - Zealand some, cases which had been sent there and which' were lying unclaimed/ 'When, opened thej; : contained rubbish. HIGH COURT APPOINTMENTS. (Eeceived March 14. 8.30 p.m.) Sydney, March 14. The council of the. Incorporated La*? Institute is not pleased with the latest appointments to the High Court. It has forwarded to Mr. Fisher. (Prime Minister) resolutions to the effect that the High ; Court should retain the fullest measure of confidence of the public. It is essential, •: ®it is urged, that the appointments to the Court should be made from the foremost ranks of the profession of the States.
