TYPHOID AMONG MAORIS
THE OUTBREAK IN THE NORTH WORSE THAN SUSPECTED. NEED FOR REGISTERING DEATHS. ■ [BY TBLTCEAPH.— «EFO»»B.] Kawaxjwa, Friday. It would appear that the typhoid outbreak in the North is more serious than was j at first suspected. Good work is un-, doubtedly being done by the health inspector (Mr. Skynner) and his staff, but notwithstanding this, the disease is spreading. When the Minister for Native Affairs (the Hon. W. H. Hemes) arrived at Kawakawa to-day a deputation waited oh him, asking that it should be made compulsory for Maoris to register deaths. The speaker who introduced the deputation said that that morning three more cases had been reported from- Waima, about 18 miles from Ohaeawai, where the main outbreak is. The speaker dwelt on the reticence of..the Maoris in exposing any, diseases in their, midst, and • asked that they should? be compelled to register deaths among their numbers. ,t; Mr. Henries said that he was not aware that the epidemic had reached such proportions. While registration of births and marriages could wait, the question of nonregistration of native deaths would have j to be. seen into. It would appear that the outbreak is more serious than most of the settlers think, and that great care will have to be taken to stamp it out, ;■'■;;••.': OASES AT WAAHI.
