WOMEN AND SOCIAL REFORM.

PROPOSALS BY W.C.T.U. [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Nelson, Wednesday. At the W.C.T.U. conference to-day resolutions were carried in favour of incorporating the Nelson system of religious instruction jn schools in the Education Act, as under this system instruction would be given by those best qualified for the task, and it would not involve the risk of introduction of denominationalisra, nor could the liberty, of conscience of anyone, of either parties or teachers, be interfered with. " That the convention strongly disapproves of the platform of the Bible in State Schools League of New Zealand." "That this convention of enfranchised women, realising the great benefits that have resulted to the Dominion, and the number of humanitarian legislative enactments passed since the suffrage of women, emphatically protests against the injustice of the British Government in refusing to grant equal political rights to the women." - "That in the interests of morality, it is desirable, when cases of affiliation, separation, or abortion are dealt with in the courts, the public should be excluded, and the press prohibited from publishing details, and, in the interests of justice, specially appointed persons be present at each hearing." " That the attention of the Government be drawn to the urgent necessity for provision of heating workrooms and offices, and, for amendments being made in the Factories Act making it compulsory upon employers to make such provision." "That, in view of the attempt made last session to secure legislation to increase the number of racing permits and publication of totalisator dividends, the convention strongly urges the Government, in the interests of the youth of the Dominion, to refuse to introduce legislation that would in any way increase facilities for gambling." "That, in the interests of morality, the convention urges the apporntment of women detectives to organise means to detect and defeat attempts to decoy or entrap young girls for immoral purposes, and to bring offenders to justice."
