CHINESE CONSUL FIRED AT. DISMISSED SECRETARY ARRESTED. Meijßotjbnb, March 12. AN. accomplished (Chinese, ,30 years^ol..*' age, named Thomas Jones Chia, has been 5 arrested on a charge of unlawfully wounding, with intent to murder Hung Liang Hwang, Chinese Consul-General. - Chia, who lately became, prominent through his marriage with a well-known;. . Australian girl, called on Hwang, and is alleged, after a long argument regarding his private affairs, to have fired two revolver [ shots without result. / He Sired '■'' ■ a third as Hwang grappled with 4 him, the bullet passing through Hwang's upper arm and shoulder. The wound is not serious. The Chinese Government, in September, on, the recommendation of the Consul, terminated Chia's engagement as secretary • .." of the Consulate. . Chia has since been; acting as manager of the Eastern Trading Company. He has held a number of important positions, including the head* mastership of the Prefectual Training College in Changchow, a professorship of English in the Pekin University, and ; the chief secretaryship to Tong, Chinese Consul-General from 1910 to 1912. He recently visited the States of Latin America, and was greatly impressed by the potentialities of that fecund -, area, which, in the next 30 years, would startle the world with its richness of production.
