THE SLAUGHTERMEN.
HOPING AGAINST HOPE.
[BY TELEGRAM".—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] ' Wellington, Tuesday. Questioned to-day regarding th© Gear Company's action in discharging slaughtermen on Saturday on the ground that thej' were not doing sufficient work, killing only six sheep an hour while able to do 12, Mr. Reardon (secretary of the Slaughtermen's Federation) said the company's action would only make the men more decided in adhering to the demands. The federation had a good insight into the working of "free" labourers, and was better pleased than ever with the new position.
Mr- Reardon added that the Canterbury slaughtermen had abandoned the idea of accepting 27s 6d per 100.
