MINING IN THE NORTH.
GOLD FOUND NEAR WHANGAREI.
[BY TELEGEArn. —OWN* CORRESPONDENT.] WHANGAREI, Monday. There seems quite a possibility of a mining revival at Whangarei Heads, where prospecting has been carried on quietly for some time past. An indication in this direction is an application to the Warden's Court that has been made for two claims on Crown land on the west side of Kauri Mountain. It appears that a reef 40ft wide has been discovered in a fork of the Tairaharuru River, and in the mineral belt between tho old Kauri Mountain claim that was formerly worked and tho present Waipareira claim, where low grade ore has been worked for some time past. Stone from the new reef which has been exhibited at Whangarei carries a fair percentage of gold, silver, and copper, but its exact value will not be known until a small parcel of quartz that has been sent forward to Auckland has been analysed.
