DEVONPORT WATER SUPPLY.

ENGINEER'S RECOMMENDATIONS,

AciconuEfG to the Devonport -waterworks engineer, Mr. F. G. Bourke, there is really nothing to warrant the fear that the Lake Takapuna supply was likely to give out. The fact that the lake at the prosenti time was much lower than formerly was no doubt due chiefly to the hot summer that has been experienced.

:In a, report which ho has prepared, Mr. Bourko states that there is no doubt" that. the intake pipe at the lake will require to be lowered by next summer,. and an extra well constructed some two or three feet lower than the existing one, with a 12in main brought from, the lake to the entrance of. the newly constructed well. The two wells should be connected together, the deeper well to bo used while tho floor of the oresent well is being lowered to the level of the new one. / As an alternative to constructing the extra, well, the engineer states that the supply could be taken from the lake direct by means of two Bin pipes connecting with the present suction pipes, and thus dispense with wells altogether. These pipes., he suggested, should bo protected by two sliding screen? to minimise the amount of vegetable matter that might possibly get into the mains. The pipes would require to be laid on suitable staging over-ground, while the vertical portion from the lake would have to bo connected by means of a" flanged joint so that it could be disconnected, lifted out, and cleared at a very small cost.

"The' condensing pipe "- concludes the pott "fa token: from the well. I -would surest .that this pipe be cut off from' the well, and be supplied direct from the lake, thereby saving approximately 600!) gallons an hour."

The Devonport Council Waterworks Committee visited' the lake yesterday afternoon, in v company with the waterworks engineer, who,. explained his scheme in detail The committee will report to the council on the advisability, of adopting the engineer's recommendations.
