By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright. New York, January 3. Heavy gales and floods are sweeping the eastern coast of the United States. The town of Newport News, Virginia, is inundated. Many schooners have been lost. Communication is paralysed over the area from Richmond, Virginia, to Atlanta, Georgia.

Considerable loss of life is reported.
