James:, James in.thia gaunt relied-1 with the Two Knights Defence; and quickly opened tip the bishop's* file 'for his rook This piece became blocked, and ; Sainsbujry won the exchange. At movo 24 Sainsbury offered the exchange of queens. James moved up a pawn .so as to entrap Sainsbury's queen, but the trap had a flaw,; for Sainsbury from his good position was enabled by a rapid exchange of pieces to bring about James's downfall. i Gyles ;v. Severn©: Gyles * played thai Gambit form of the Vienna . Opening. Seveme changed off minor pieces early and gave Gyles a very open game. The latter [ attacked T strongly, : making [good ! use of the I open knights while he forced the exchange of : queens and of a bishop for a'knight, winning two queen's''mde pawns.- Pushing the attack Gyles won a bishop, *. and after a desultory hunting of his king,. Severni resigned. *' | Cole v. Hicks: Cole opened with thai Queen's Pawn game, and both players obtained a free open position. :-*' The ex- ; changes ■oo r the middle game were no ad-, vantage to either side. Hicks, however, later took a pawn .with his queen, which/ owing to a threatening mate, could not ba taken. Hicks exchanged queens, and t«hi' the rooks opposing his queen's side' the rook's pawn opposing his queen's das' exchanged, and "Cole resigned. Doddsv. Barnes:: Barnes" made the Morphy defence to Dodds's Ruy Lopez. .As, even game was played up. to move 23, when JDodds threatened to win a pawn.; Barnes attacked the dpposing queen upon' his position. The end game left both players with scattered pawns; Barnes with' a knight against -Dodds's. -bishop. . Dodds had a chance of winning a pawn, but his queen would have been out of play.* Barnes rapidly advanced a pawn,. : and"; shut off Dodds's support,' and - the latter, J seeing that he must lose his pawns, re-i , signed. In' the eighth round Mason beat Cole, and Selling beat Maunsell.
