OBITUARY.
PRINCE REGENT OF BAVARIA.
By Telegraph.— Association.—-Copyright. London, December 12. The death has occurred of Prince Luitpold, Regent of Bavaria.
The story of the mad King Otto of Bavaria (for whom his uncle, Prince Luitpold has acted as Regent ever since he entered upon his nominal reign in 1886) is one of the most pitiful in modern history.. Ho is a monarch who has never sat on his throne or worn his crown, and he is now spending his weary years as a hopeless lunatic in one of his own palaces. The King, who is now 64 years of age, succeeded his brother, Ludwig 11, in 1886. The latter became mad towards the end of his reign, and drowned himself in a lake. Prince Otto, who was then 38 years of age, was even madder than his brother had been, he having been mentally deranged since the ago of 28. When the mad King Ludwig died it was felt that there could be no question of his being succeeded by his yet madder brother, but it was decided, after much discussion, that the latter's claims to the throne could not be altogether set aside. Ho was therefore regarded as King, but he has never been crowned. His uncle, Luitpold, was appointed Regent, and has ruled over the kingdom for the past 26 years. The Prince. Regent had attained the age of 91 years. His eldest son, Prince Ludwig, is 67' years of age.
